New Car Park & Visitor Centre Open

We are delighted to announce that the new car park and refreshment area in Penllergare Valley Woods has opened today (Friday 20th September). This new, much anticipated facility will be open every day, for the time being, from 10am to 4pm. The opening of the refreshment area will be followed shortly by an information / exhibition display in the upper level of the new visitor centre.

Run by local volunteers, visitors will receive a warm welcome and will be able to enjoy a cup of tea and fantastic coffee on the open terrace overlooking the upper terraces of the former Dillwyn Llewelyn landscape garden, with glimpses of the upper lake, currently undergoing restoration. Light refreshments will also be served.

The pay and display car park will initially be open from 9am until 5pm. Receipts from the car park will be ploughed back into the management and maintenance of Valley Woods to ensure it remains the much loved and valued local amenity that it has become in recent years, thanks to the Penllergare Trust and all its supporters.

Whilst there is still work in progress on the surrounding landscape restoration, and there are some visitor restrictions there are several new, accessible paths from the car park with some really good viewing points over the lake restoration project in the valley bottom. A visit is highly recommended! The car park and visitor centre can be found off the entrance drive to the Swansea City Council offices at Penllergaer close to J47 of the M4 motorway on the Llangyfelach A48 main road.

This new facility has been made possible through the dedicated support of local volunteers, the Heritage Lottery Fund, through its Parks for People programme and is also part of the ‘One Historic Garden Project’ that links heritage, gardens and opportunities across South Wales, part-funded by the EU Convergence European Regional Development Fund through ‘Visit Wales’ and the Welsh Government.

For further information, you can either visit us, email or call 01792 344224.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Invite to Open Meeting

The Penllergare Trust is holding its AGM on 24th July and this year it will be followed by an open session at 5.30 pm in the Llewelyn Hall at which the Trustees are keen to meet Friends and supporters and to answer questions.

Everyone is welcome to attend. You are also invited, if you so wish, to submit questions in advance to Project Director, Philip James ( and the Trustees will endeavour to answer them either at the meeting, or by email, or letter afterwards.

The Q & A session will be followed by an illustrated talk by Mike Thurlow on his experience as Head Gardener, of restoring Audley End Walled Kitchen Garden. Prior to that Mike had been Head Gardener at Dyffryn and Aberglasney.

Going Wild for Wildflowers

Edward Tucker, Woodland Warden, and Keith Clements, volunteer ranger, organised a wildflower walk on Saturday 15th June to mark Wales Biodiversity Week. Nearly one hundred species were seen and named – these were just a few of them.

Penllergare Trust appeals for volunteers to help transform Swansea beauty spot

A group working to transform one of Swansea’s finest beauty spots is looking for volunteers.

Penllergare Trust has come up with a volunteer wishlist to help with its massive restoration project at Penllergare Valley Woods.

The list comprises film-makers, photographers, researchers, rangers, surveyors, guided walk leaders, marketing assistants, and admin assistants.

Could you be our eyes and ears?

Volunteer Rangers walk the woods individually or in groups on a regular basis at times convenient to them in order to ensure a positive, safe and welcoming experience for all.

The Penllergare Trust will be organising a taster session for those wishing to be a volunteer ranger on Tuesday 16th April from 9.30am – 1pm.

HSBC – a part of our story!

On Sunday 24th March, the Penllergare Trust had the pleasure of hosting a volunteer day for staff from the Swansea HSBC branch. David Connick our estate manager organised the fun-packed day. He provided a short walk and talk about the estate, its history, wildlife and people, and an update about the restoration project followed by a volunteer activity which involved reinstating the path on the east bank of the estate.

Congratulations Michael Norman

A celebration of environmental action by local community groups, businesses and schools took place at the Marriott Hotel last week as people from across Swansea gathered for the prestigious Sustainable Swansea Awards presentation dinner.

The aim of the awards is to encourage local organisations and individuals to do that bit extra for their community and the environment and to reward those that show real commitment to good environmental practice and sustainability. The awards were started in 2004 and are run every two years by Swansea Environmental Forum in partnership with Swansea Council, SCVS and the Environment Centre.

Volunteers for Visitor Kiosk Wanted

Calling all retail, catering and community ambassador enthusiasts!!! The new visitor kiosk at Penllergare Valley Woods is taking shape and should be ready by the summer. It will be two-tiered – a small area for refreshments on the lower level and a small exhibition/retail space and toilets on the upper level.

Half Term at Penllergare

Most sites completely shut their doors when a restoration project is taking place. Here at Penllergare Valley Woods we want everyone to share the experience in any way that they can/want to. Here are just a few ways for you and the whole family to get involved over February Half Term. We’d be grateful if you could let us know if you’re thinking of coming along to any of the organised events so that we can keep an eye on numbers.
